Obama's Inaugural address

1月20日、世界中が注目したオバマの就任演説。

世界で経済危機や戦争が起きている暗い時代だからこそ、彼のスピーチとリーダーシップには大きな注目が集っていると思う。


歴史を尊重し、先祖を称え、問題に立ち向かい、真理を問い、皆に力強く希望を与えられるようなスピーチだったと思う。

オバマの演説で共感した部分を抜粋したい。

問題を指すメッセージ：

• This crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. 「今回の(金融)危機は、注意深い監視がなされなければ、市場は制御不能になり、豊かな者のみを優遇する国は長く繁栄することはできないことを我々に気付かせた。」

希望を作るメッセージ：

• On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. 「この日に我々が集ったのは、恐れではなく、希望を選んだためで、争いの代わりに団結を選んだからだ。」
• The God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness. 「すべての人々は平等、自由で最大限の幸福を追求する価値があるという、神の約束である。」

世界へのメッセージ：

• To all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more. 「我々を今見ている他の民族や政府に対して言いたい。巨大な都市から、私の父が生まれたような最も小さな村まで、米国は平和で尊厳ある将来を求めるすべての国々とすべての男女、そして子どもの友人であり、もう一度、指導力を発揮する用意があることを知ってほしい。」
• For those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you. 「無実な人々を殺したり、脅迫で自己の目的の実現を図る者に対し、告げる。我々の意思の方が強く、我々の意思を曲げることはできない。我々の方が長く生き、そして打ち負かす。」
  

真理を指すメッセージ：

• Our success depends hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism — these things are old. These things are true. 「我々が成功するかどうかは、労働と誠実さ、勇気、フェアプレー、忍耐、好奇心、忠誠心や愛国心にかかっている。古くから言われていることだ。だが、真実だ。」
• It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours.It is the firefighter's courage to storm　a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate. 「堤防が決壊した時に見知らぬ人をも招き入れる親切や、友人が仕事を失うことになるよりも、自分の労働時間を削ってでも仕事を分け合おうという労働者たちの無私無欲のおかげで、最も暗い時を切り抜けることができる。煙に満ちた階段を駆け上がる消防士の勇気や、子どもを育てる親たちの意志が、最終的に我々の運命を決定付ける。」
  

特に自分は、この真理を指す部分で、スポーツが大きな役割を持ち、社会に貢献するこ とができたら、と願っている。

日本にも「圧倒的な」リーダーシップが必要なんだと思う。 それは、真理への回帰を力強く問い、大きな希望を植えつけられる人なんだと思う。

スピーチの最後には、こんな言葉が。

In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words.

「共通の脅威に直面した非常に困難なこの冬に、これら永遠の言葉を忘れないでいよう 。」

「いいから結果だしてくれよ」、というコメントが飛び交うことがあるが、こうした「希望の言葉 」というのは、人間の心を支える上で本当に大切なんだと改めて思った。

自分も、大きな心で頑張らないと。
